Christophe était un géant qui, après bien des péripéties, fut converti par un ermite. Un jour, un enfant le sollicita pour la traversée. S’appuyant sur son bâton, Christophe le prit sur ses épaules pour le conduire sur l’autre berge. Mais, à mesure qu’ils progressaient dans l’eau, l’enfant devenait de plus en plus lourd et le fleuve de plus en plus menaçant. Après avoir reposé l’enfant, il lui dit : “Enfant, tu m’as exposé à un grand danger, et tu m’as tant pesé que si j’avais eu le monde entier sur moi, je ne sais si j’aurais eu plus lourd à porter.” L’enfant lui répondit : “Ne t’en étonne pas, car tu n’as pas seulement porté le monde sur tes épaules, mais tu as aussi porté celui qui a créé le monde : je suis le Christ ton roi.”

I spent the night alone in the forgotten desert of the Pacific Northwest! This area, known as the Channeled Scablands, is a place where few backpackers ever go, probably because it's not what people think of when they think of Washington State, or the Pacific Northwest. Most backpackers head for the famous rocky coasts, or the legendary mountains of this region. But just east of those mountains, and often forgotten, is a remarkable desert that holds incredible geological significance and unique beauty unlike anywhere in the world! The deserts of Utah and Arizona certainly deserve their iconic status, but backpacking solo through this overlooked desert region left me with a deep love for its singular beauty, and a fascination for how its grand coulees have helped unlock the secrets of how the earth as we know it was formed!
