Des humains vivaient-ils sur l’entièreté du territoire de l’Afrique australe au Paléolithique ? Dans le cadre du projet "Human Origins", un archéologue et un spéléologue mènent l’enquête au coeur des entrailles de la Terre.

Il y a trois millions d’années, les premiers hommes posaient le pied sur le continent africain. Aujourd’hui, deux bassins abritant des vestiges des australopithèques ont été découverts : en Éthiopie, le long de la vallée du Grand Rift – avec le squelette de la célèbre Lucy –, et la grotte de Sterkfontein, au nord-ouest de Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud – avec, notamment, Little Foot, le fossile le plus ancien et le plus complet jamais observé. Longtemps, la communauté scientifique a pensé que ces anciens hominidés résidaient dans un berceau unique au périmètre restreint. : une thèse désormais réfutée. Pour le projet Human Origin, une équipe internationale de chercheurs se met alors en quête des premiers fossiles d’australopithèques en Afrique australe (hors Afrique du Sud).

Quête fondamentale

Où, précisément, les premiers hommes sont-ils apparus ? C’est la question à laquelle l’archéologue Laurent Bruxelles, de l’Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap), et le spéléonaute Frédéric Swierczynski s'emploient à répondre. Grâce aux compétences hors normes de ce dernier, capable de plonger à plus de 250 mètres de profondeur, les deux scientifiques sondent, de la Namibie au Botswana en passant par le Malawi, les gouffres les plus dangereux du monde à la recherche de brèches, ces "amas de matières minérales qui agissent comme un ciment naturel et protègent les fossiles de l'érosion", précise Laurent Bruxelles. Suivis par la caméra d’Anthony Binst, les chercheurs explorent ainsi les entrailles de la Terre pour percer les secrets qu’elles recèlent. Au fil de leur expédition spectaculaire, une quête fondamentale pour notre connaissance des origines du genre humain.

Paris, la ville lumière, cache dans son ombre ses plus fragiles sans-abris. Des hommes et des femmes qui plongent toujours plus profond pour survivre. Parkings, bouches d’égout, tunnels de sécurité, sous-sols de galeries commerciales... sont leur dernier refuge.
C’est aussi le terrain d’action d’une police unique au monde : la BAPSA. Pendant un an, nous avons vécu aux côtés d’une vingtaine de ces sans-abris oubliés de tous. Nous y avons fait des rencontres marquantes, touchantes et souvent glaçantes. Alain tend la main toute la journée. Le soir, il disparaît dans le métro dès la fermeture des portes. Éviter à tout prix de disparaître dans les sous-sols du monde, c’est le combat de Marie-José, Michel et leurs cinq enfants. Acculés financièrement, ils vivent dans les bois depuis deux mois. En équilibre entre le monde du dessus et celui du dessous, ils luttent chaque jour pour rester dignes. Sébastien, lui, a accepté sa solitude face à la misère. Mais il n’est pas complètement seul... Ancien toxicomane, l’hôpital public lui fournit une compagne : la Méthadone. Comme lui, beaucoup de SDF sont drogués ou alcooliques.
Quand d’autres, sont malades. 70% des sans-abris souffriraient de troubles psychiatriques. Maximilien est schizophrène. Royaliste convaincu, il livre tous les jours ses délires au fond de son tunnel.
Comment en arrive-t-on à se terrer sous le sol, au-dessous du monde ? Qui sont ces invisibles ? À leurs côtés, plongez dans les sombres bas-fonds de la République et découvrez l’autre visage d’une des plus belles villes du monde.
