C’est un raz-de-marée qui fait trembler les États-Unis: l’addiction au Fentanyl. Ce nom, que presque personne n’avait entendu il y a à peine dix ans, s’est frayé un chemin en tête des priorités nationales.

Les opioïdes de synthèse ont provoqué la mort de 129 000 Américains en 2020 et 2021. Et depuis 2013, ces décès ont été multipliés par dix-huit. Le Fentanyl, considéré comme cinquante fois plus puissant que l’héroïne, est le plus dangereux d’entre eux. Une véritable crise sanitaire qui confronte des services d’urgence débordés et des familles dépassées par une déferlante d’overdoses de personnes souvent très jeunes.
De l’autre côté du miroir, au Mexique, s’orchestre cette catastrophe sanitaire : la marchandise s’élabore, les techniques pour se jouer des autorités se perfectionnent et la distribution se planifie.
L’arrivée du Fentanyl et autres opioïdes de synthèse a bouleversé l’univers du narcotrafic mexicain. Une aubaine inespérée pour les cartels de la drogue : inutile de cultiver le pavot, inutile de s’appuyer sur des communautés rurales pour la production d’opium. Le Fentanyl, sous forme de pilules à l’aspect inoffensif, est léger, discret, facile à produire et à transporter. Sauf qu’une seule pilule peut tuer. Et les ravages de cette substance s’étendent peu à peu sur le continent américain.
