Dans les marécages du centre du pays, Hato, 13 ans, cherche l’or sous la vase. Chaque jour, il passe plusieurs heures à creuser au fond de l’eau, immergé dans la boue et dans le noir complet. Il respire grâce à un fin tuyau en plastique, relié à un compresseur d’air posé sur la pirogue de son père. Un poumon d'acier alimenté au diesel, qui sert en temps normal à gonfler les pneus des voitures... La moindre panne et sous l'eau, c'est la mort assurée.
À 800 kilomètres de là sur l’île de Leyte, Dennis Junior, 14 ans, est affublé du même matériel de fortune lorsqu’il plonge à 20 mètres de profondeur, dans les eaux chaudes et claires de la mer de Bohol. Avec son père, il gratte les fonds marins, remplit des sacs de sable, puis les remonte à la surface… C’est Germinal, sous l’eau.
D’après l’ONG Human Rights Watch, au moins 1000 enfants auraient été embarqués par leurs parents dans cette quête insensée.
