Poets and doctors both save lives, just in different ways. World-champion slam poet Harry Baker shares the heartache of forfeiting the path of medicine for a self-guided career in poetry and writing. This talk is an ode to choosing to be different, woven through two poems that sing with universal truth. While he won’t help the world by becoming a doctor, as he puts it, poetry is just “a less quantifiable way of saving lives.”
TED@StateStreet was a TED-curated event featuring a diverse group of speakers from across the State Street community. Jointly produced by TED and State Street, the event paved a bold way ahead.

► ABOUT THIS HIKE
In January 2024 I hiked 200 kilometers in the heart of the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand. I combined several routes into a continuous 7-day route, including the Cascade Saddle Route, Rees-Dart, Earnslaw Burn, Routeburn and Greenstone-Caples.
Interested in doing this hike? Check out the travel guide (https://www.thatch.co/guide/eu0dwzvv7u3q) to explore this custom route. The guide has a flexible 7-14 day itinerary split into 6 stages. It explains everything you need to know: how to get there, where to camp, where to stay in huts, when to go, the weather, and much more. Included are Custom Google Maps and GPX files.
This is an ambient film without dialog.
