In March of 2024, Otto and I thru-hiked the West Highland Way in Scotland, one of the most famous long-distance trails in the UK. Come join us for days 7 and 8 of our (wild)camping adventure where we got to the most iconic parts of the trail and finally finished the hike.

La Route nationale 5a, n' a de nationale que le nom. C’est ainsi que l’on peut qualifier la portion de route qui relie Ambilobe, au Nord-ouest de la Grande île, à Vohémar, au Nord-est. C'est une piste de 160 kms, surnommé la "la piste de l' enfer". Pendant les mois de janvier et février, en saison des pluies, elle est difficilement praticable. La piste devient alors un véritable parcourt du combattant qui se fait normalement en deux ou trois jours, mais qui souvent peut prendre plus de 15 jours. Ornières. Mares de boue. A certains moments, la piste est trop étroite pour laisser passer deux camions. C’est une des raisons qui empêche les bus d’utiliser cette route.
Pourtant, c'est la seule voie routière pour rejoindre la côte de la vanille au bord de l'océan Indien. Un handicap pour tout le Nord, l’une des plus grandes zones économiques du pays, car l’état de la route bloque l’écoulement de la vanille et des nombreux minerais de la région. Le problème de la RN 5 vient de l’absence d’entretien. Au fil du temps, elle se dégrade de plus en plus. L’État semble avoir oublié cet axe économique, maltraité en outre par les gros véhicules de transport de marchandises n: trous béants, multiples déviations… Le mauvais état de la route se répercute sur la vie de la région. Par exemple, pour acheminer leur fruits et légumes, les cultivateurs doivent recourir aux boutres (bateaux), pour être sûrs de les vendre dans la capitale.
